What, exactly is a bead? Some people would say that it is any small object with a hole in it. At least this is
Deborah Zinn's position. I take a functional view: a bead is a small object capable of being strung that fulfills typical bead functions. Then bead functions have to be listed: adornment of humans, animals and inanimate objects; counting (prayer strands, rosaries); charms (amulets and talismans); social diacritical marks; and a few others.
Things not made as beads can become beads by someone using them that way. But, there are also bead-like things that were never used as beads and cannot be considered as beads. Test your bead vs. non-bead skills with this little quiz. Sorry, I am the ultimate judge here; it's a perk of being the webmaster.
Is it a Bead? (Yes, they all have holes)
