Made of clay, this is a more common shape for a spindle whorl, the type used in the Middle East for a long time. Large holes and radial symmetry are necessities for these little tools. Many of them are also asymmetric in their profiles, like this one.
Aside from modern times, there are cases where spindle whorls were worn in the past. However, I know of no such cases involving this type.
