Ancient Beads: The Americas

More recently populated than the other continents, the bead story in the Americas is no less rich. Beads are found along with some of the earliest traces of humans in the Western Hemisphere.

A few millennia later, the beads were as
varied and complex as beads in the Middle East of similar date.

The great beadmaking traditions of ancient America (more on them later) were

destroyed by the Spanish.

Thus, bead industries in Latin America (at least in Mexico) are flourishing but
are non-traditional.

Ancient beads in America are featured in issues 1(4), 7(2) and 10 (1) of the
Margaretologist, our journal.
