Cultural Decoration

Most any bead can be decorative, but here we highlight some people for whom the decoration provided by beads have permeated their culture.

We begin with a contribution by Buckee Bell on the Ndebele of South Africa.

Their beadwork shows up on many pieces of clothing, including the large, distinctive hoops they wear at different parts of their bodies.

It is transferred to their dolls (who also wear the hoops) and items they make for tourists.

Similar designs are used to decorate their houses. The Ndebele are truly surrounded with reminders of their beadwork.
