Karla: Are you looking for in bulk, or one at a time? If one at a time...I put my own veil together some 10 years ago. Have you looked in your fabric or local craft stores? I think I got the head piece at Michaels, and the veiling at the fabric store. It was a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a pre-made one. :)

Diane,
Rather an amateur but am into flamework, currently have a Hot Head but have a Minor Burner Head in the mail. I am located in Australia where there is very little info on flameworking so I have learnt the hard way. Post your e-mail and I will give you a few clues or perhaps you can give me some.

Rose: What do you need...the order that the beads go in? Or suggestions on how to put one together? I made one of two different sizes of rose quartz. Each bead was strung on a piece of wire, which had loops in each end. The loops were connected together then, so each bead was a link. I got a two to one triangular type connector (I forget the name) at Beads Galore, and strung the number of beads below that the same way. The people who commissioned it had their own cross. I found the number of beads required on a search on 'rosary' on the internet, but I've lost the bookmark since then.

Lissa: - ip-26-136.phx.primenet.com - Wednesday, April 21, 1999 at 12:32:00 (EDT)
gyspyrose1: I haven't done anything that size, but I have seen a wall size loom work that was just incredible. It was done on a 'real' loom. The main thing I would be concerned about is the weight of the piece stretching your threads. Be careful what thread you plan to use. I know someone who takes her work to a framing shop, and just has them matt and frame it. I have also seen peices where the top was folded over to make a loop, and a rod run through that, then the peice hung by chains on either end of the rod. You could also tack down the peice to another material (like leather), and use *that* to frame from. Good luck. Let me know how it comes out--I've been thinking of doing something similar for awhile now.

Lissa: - ip-26-136.phx.primenet.com - Wednesday, April 21, 1999 at 12:27:34 (EDT)
Helen: No, I just extend a flap off of one side of the bag with flat peyote, and work about 6 rows until it is long enough to go over to the other side, then just zip it into place. This leaves a little gap at either side of the bottom, but nobody but me seems to have noticed that yet. You could fill in those gaps as well I suppose, whip stitching them with perhaps a bead per stitch to cover. The one I did with a looser tension doesn't have any problems with holes. I don't do it *that* loose. :)

i am going to be doing a beadwork and it is going to be 4'x4' and i would like to know if anyone has done anything that size so i will know what the problems i might have. it will be done in delica beads and seed and crystals it will have alot of other things on it. what would be the best way to frame something like that if anyone can give ideas or ways for me to do let me know thank you gyspyrose.

Lissa: Thanks! I am afraid that looser tension would have holes, but I guess not. Do you make a round bottom?

Lissa: - ip-26-136.phx.primenet.com - Tuesday, April 20, 1999 at 18:44:38 (EDT)
Helen: I usually have that problem with my peyote bags. Yes, your tension is too tight. But you can use flat peyote to make a bottom, which gives a little more room in the bag. I plan mine that way now, with a 4 bead border up each side to account for it in my pattern. My bags made of tubular netting on the other hand, lay flat, and are much more flexible.

Am lookings for preferrably a wholesale or manufactured source of glass beads already strung on twill tape to be used as fringes on lampshades. Any suggestions? Would greatly appreciate some help. Am quite tired of the long hours beading my own. Also, I am looking for supplies in old buggle beads, about 30-50 mm in length, any color, and the diameter is usually 4-6 millimeter. Often, the have lengthwise ridges or are matte finish. Will buy dirty ones that need cleaning or may still be partially strung. Help me, please? Email at antiquities@internetwis.com. Thank you

QV: You are looking for fringe beads, they are to be found at Fire Mountain also at Cindys Crafts. The ones I have recently purchased were Magatamas. The hole is off centre and they are sized about 3-4mm. Colours are fantastic. I do not have Cindys Crafts book marked at my home computer but she sent me 19 idfferent colours which arrived in Australia within a week of my ordering them. The transparent rainbow ones are the prettiest but there are solid colours and also matt so give her a try. I would check my work computer but am on Jury service this week not a really choice case and expected to run for another week or so.

Hi everyone. Sounds like Lissa has a case there for promoting local beadmaking, but the world does change. Imports of beadwork have been coming in for years. Have they really hurt?
In general, the Japanese seed beads are more regular, with delicas being the most prefect. The Japanese have computerized their beadmaking machines. We saw the obsolete models of Japanese beadmaking machines, sold to India by Toho. Very interesting to contrast that operation with the Czechs'.
Bob G. Don't know if you can purchase Chinaberries. I have never sen them offered anywhere. People just use the pits from the tree (I think Melia azerderich).
~Peace

QV: I'm not sure on glass fringe, outside of making it yourself. (Not hard, but time consuming.) But as to the web page, I would bet it was either http://www.mcs.net/~simone/beadnet.html or http://www.mcs.net/~simone/beadfairies.html .

hello folks, first time I am here. Question time, I am looking for glass beaded fringes. Any suggestions for a source. Also, the other day I stumbled upon a web page with many bead resources listed. But I cannot find it again. The person was a real bead lover and had created the page just to assist in finding bead resources. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Come join us as we explore the unlimited possibilities in the medium of glass beadmaking. Tom and Sage are fortunate in having the opportunity to use the Meadow Creek Facility for our studio. Meadow Creek is a 1700 acre Wildlife Sanctuary with rivers, creeks, and trails. It's perimeters are surrounded by bluffs that inspire the imagination. Be sure to bring good walking shoes if you like to hike, or mountain bike, canoe or fishing gear. But most of all come with the desire to make beautiful beads. Together Tom and Sage have over 20 years experience with a large technique repertoire. I took the spring class this year and can't say enough good things about it. It's like entering another world at Meadow Creek. Tom and Sage have their work in many of the major bead books you see today. I am just begining in glass beadmaking and thought I was doing well. But after coming away from these classes I have a new outlook of the possibilities of beadmaking. Tom and Sage show many time saving and detailed tricks. Along with a large assortment of techniques. If you are at all interested in beadmaking, new or oldtimer, I encourage you to look into this class. It was one of the better things I've done. Tell a freind. Classes fill quickly. Oct. 8-12 & 15-19, 1999. You can contact them at 870-269-2231. They are going to a show in Boston soon but they have an answering machine.

Joye: Besides where they are manufactured? :) I haven't worked with them, but I understand the Japanese seed beads are more regular, and that that is reflected in their price. They are different again from the Japanese delica beads, which are shaped more like bricks than blobs, and have bigger holes (but are the most regular yet).

Tom: Good luck...but I wish you wouldn't. There are a lot of us in the United States trying to make a living by doing beadwork, and would jump at the chance of actually being hired instead of trying to work the galleries and craft show circuit. But, yes, your costs would go up. I personally charge $10 an hour plus materials for my work, and a simple amulet pouch starts at $150 at those prices. Beadwork takes time--lots of it. To have imported beadwork coming in as competition makes it that much harder to get respect for the time and effort that goes into creating bead art. Have you tried to live at $10 an hour? And yet it is like pulling teeth to get people to see that skilled handicraft work is worth even that much, because they can get the same bag for $15 from imported (though usually lower quality) work. Do me a favor sometime? Get one of the bead looms (they are not expensive) and make one of your own pieces. See how much work and time goes into it, to get an appreciation of the art.

Tom Vial: - spider-tp082.proxy.aol.com - Wednesday, April 07, 1999 at 08:12:31 (EDT)
I have jewelry and accessory design business and am looking for resources in Central or South America. My pieces are currently made in India and I am looking for something a little closer. The pieces are made mostly of seed beads, and are made on a loom, (I think!).

I am desperate to find a co-op of skilled handicraftsmen or women who would like to have the work and who are treated fairly and paid a fare wage.

If ANYONE has ANY leads, Please forward to me at
VCStudios@aol.com

Thanks--Tom

Hi everyone. The three of us just finished a somewhat harrowing two week tour of North India looking at archaeological and modern beads. Complete details from bEad-Mail. Send an email to the office (from the home page) and ask for it. It's free and comes out about once a month and lets you know what's happening.

As to the Fire Mountain product, I was aware it wasn't Soft Flex, but when you are making a commission piece and that is what the lady specifies as materials... It went through the pearls well enough, but didn't drape nicely.
pid: Be careful of the 'make bead stuff in your home' companies. Usually the only ones making money are the companies--I understand you have to buy their materials, but your work is never up to standards. If you come across a reputable one, many of us would like to know. I don't know who else to look at--clothing companies maybe?
